From award-winning filmmaker David Grabias, COMMON GROUND follows the adventures of three pairs of riders – one international rider joining one Canadian host – who head out on a six-day ride through urban and remote locations across Canada. Harley-Davidson owners from New Zealand, India, and Mexico are paired with Canadians riders from Montréal, Cape Breton, and Edmonton who introduced their international guests to the wonders and adventures of Canada’s open roads. Travelling through the Rockies, along the Cabot Trail, and from Toronto to Québec City, the riders are:
Jay Reeve (Auckland, New Zealand) and Charles-Édouard Carrier (Montréal)
If someone is from Montréal and rides a motorcycle, chances are they know Carrier. A former healthcare manager, he left everything behind to follow his passion and become a lifestyle, travel, and motorcycle journalist. Riding for nearly ten years, Carrier bought his first bike before he even got his license.
Growing up on a farm in New Zealand, Reeve has been riding motorcycles since the day his feet could touch the pedals. A former teacher, pro-surfer, VJ, and radio DJ, throughout all the twists and turns of his life, motorcycles have always been the one constant. Now an entrepreneur and father of twin boys, in what little free time he has, Reeve can be found either in the ocean or on a bike.
Eduardo Diez (Mexico) and Johanna Poultney (Edmonton)
Obsessed with motorcycles since she was five, Poultney started riding on dirt bikes before graduating to a Harley-Davidson. With a desire to share her passion, in 2015 she founded the Edmonton Chapter of The Litas, a global collective of women who ride, counting more than 2,800 members in 18 countries. A trained paramedic who works in the oilfields, Poultney is also an avid scuba diver, rock climber, ice climber, surfer, world traveler, and accomplished rider with multiple North American road trips under her belt.
In the balmy province of Nuevo Leon, Mexico, it’s always riding season. Freed from the limitations of Canadian weather, Diez rides his Harley-Davidson seven days a week, 365 days a year. When he’s not riding, Diez enjoys restoring and customizing classic cars with his father. A devout Catholic, Diez follows a strict habit of having his bike blessed before any long trip. In the last year alone, he’s ridden from Monterrey, north to Austin, Texas, and south to the jungles of San Luis Potosi.
SAC Vasanth (India) and Daniel Ross (Arisaig, N.S.)
When riders want information on the world famous Cabot Trail on Cape Breton Island, they don’t call the Nova Scotia Tourism Office, they call Ross. The self-styled “Cabot Trail Biker,” Ross knows anything and everything about the Cabot Trail, and takes pride in helping riders from around the world experience what he believes is the best ride in Canada.
A common form of transportation in India, Vasanth has been riding motorcycles since he was a teenager. Now with decades of experience riding under the unrelenting Indian sun along the country’s infamous roads, Vasanth, a professional magician and entertainer for 15 years, considers riding part transportation, part meditation.
The one-hour television broadcast premiere of COMMON GROUND is made possible through a partnership between Discovery’s Brand Partnership team, Harley-Davidson Canada, and partner agencies Initiative and Zulu Alpha Kilo.
