Match Previews from TSN Soccer Analyst Gareth Wheeler
Nigeria vs. USA: The Americans are in pole position taking on Nigeria in their group finale. The USA backline will be tested against a pacey group of Nigerian attacking players. But for what Nigeria has in attack, they lack defensively. Goals will be scored.
Australia vs. Sweden: Australia and Sweden is a must-watch affair, with the teams currently on three and two points, respectively. Australia will be in the driver's seat, playing a Swedish team trying to avoid an emotional drop-off after an energy-sapping draw with the USA. A dip in play would be predictable, with Pia Sundhage's side having played beyond expectations in the last match against their head coach's former team.
Switzerland vs. Cameroon: Stars emerge at every tournament. No star has shined brighter than Switzerland's Ramona Bachmann. With three goals, an assist, and an impressive 13 shots in the tournament thus far, Bachmann has been a buzzsaw, while also showing all kinds of creativity on the ball. No player has been better in Canada. There is much to like about Switzerland. They were unlucky to not come away with something after a very good showing against Japan in their opener. A win or a draw against Cameroon would see Switzerland finish second place in Group C and play second place in Group A at Commonwealth Stadium in the Round of 16. Based upon their positive play, the Swiss would be a favourite against whoever they play, and that includes Canada.
Ecuador vs. Japan: Defending champions Japan have so far justified their billing as favourites at the FIFA Women’s World Cup, becoming the first team to book their place in the Round of 16 after only two matches. While the Nadeshiko can now go into their final group game with the pressure off, the South Americans will be focused on leaving the tournament on a high note after two heavy defeats: a 6-0 rout by Cameroon and a 10-1 thrashing by Switzerland.
