TORONTO (November 27, 2017) – Rocking around the Christmas tree never felt so futuristic! DAILY PLANET, Canada’s favourite science magazine program, spotlights the world’s most modern, indulgent, and luxurious gadgets and gizmos during its most-anticipated theme week of the year “High-Tech Toys Week”. Airing exclusively on Discovery, Monday, Dec. 4 through Friday, Dec. 8 at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT, the annual television event unwraps the most sought-after and most buzz-worthy toys to top every tech-lover’s wish list this holiday season.
(L-R): Ziya Tong delivers low-blow punches with inventor Christian Thostrup’s Jabii; DAILY PLANET tech expert Lucas Cochran rides the Star Wars-inspired one-of-a-kind Jedivator
From modern ways to capture underwater footage and 3-D self portraits, to one-of-a kind creations (including a levitating Star Wars-inspired vehicle!), co-hosts Ziya Tong and Dan Riskin track down the coolest, science-savvy toys to feature in DAILY PLANET’s playground – also known as the DAILY PLANET studio – during “High-Tech Toys Week”.
Highlights include:
“Jedivator”
DAILY PLANET’s tech expert Lucas Cochran steps into Rob Innes’ custom garage to ride shotgun in his one-of-a-kind, hose-powered aerial vehicle – the Jedivator. Armed with the Jedivator and a dolphin-shaped submersible vehicle, Innes has a whole set of custom water machines made to look like flying space crafts, bikes, and even a flying bus.
“Justice League Batmobile”
Based off the epic Batmobile vehicle from this month’s Justice League film release, Mattel has created a remote-controlled version, allowing super fans to experience the road as seen through the eyes of the Caped Crusader. Connected by an app on any tablet or smartphone, users see where their Batmobile is heading by way of a point-of-view camera in the cockpit, all the while experiencing real vaporized smoke from the exhaust pipe.
“JABii”
JABii is a new game that allows users to punch each other without leaving a bruise. Created for both children and adults, the padded and extendable gloves are used to take on opponents in a combined virtual- and real-world setting. DAILY PLANET co-host Ziya Tong tests the latest prototype with inventor Christian Thostrup, uncovering the secrets behind delivering a more gentle blow in a boxing battle.
“3D Selfie”
DAILY PLANET travels to Korea where a team is creating amazingly detailed selfies in 3-D form at record speeds. A 72-camera system captures a person’s body from all angles in less than a second, then sends it to a 3-D printer to produce a completely unique selfie action figure! DAILY PLANET challenges the 3-D selfie by testing the system’s ability to handle the rapid-fire moves of a Taekwondo expert while rendering a figure in fine, crisp detail.
“Blueye”
This underwater drone allows its users to shoot video and view it via mobile or other personal devices in real time. Not only is the drone controlled from a smart phone using the Blueye App, but every live dive can be livestreamed over social media, making remote underwater exploration possible without a diver or a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) operator.
Subscribers can catch up on past episodes on demand on the Discovery GO app and at Discovery.ca. Live streaming of DAILY PLANET is also available on Discovery GO.
