Game Day Notes: Australia vs. Nigeria

Australia and Nigeria are meeting for the first time in a women’s international game at any level.

Australia

  • Lost opening group game 3-1 to USA
  • Have won three of their 16 all-time group stage matches at the FIFA Women’s World Cup (3W/4D/9L)
  • Have qualified for six consecutive FIFA Women's World Cups, only missing the inaugural FIFA Women's World Cup in 1991

Nigeria

  • Tied Sweden 3-3 in opening group game
  • Nigeria, the 2014 African champion, have participated in all seven FIFA Women’s World Cups, one of seven teams to do so
  • Have won three of their 19 FIFA Women’s World Cup group stage matches (3W/3D/13L)
  • Nigeria beat Canada 1-0 in final group game of 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup
  • Have never won their second group stage match at the FIFA Women’s World Cup

Game Day Notes: Switzerland vs. Ecuador

Switzerland and Ecuador are meeting for the first time in a women’s international game at any level. The nations have combined for six of the 27 yellow cards shown in the group stage thus far. Both teams are seeking their first goal of the tournament.

Switzerland

  • Lost their first-ever FIFA Women’s World Cup  game 1-0 to Japan
  • Of 11 European teams making their debut in the history of the FIFA Women’s World Cup, none have lost both of their opening two group stage matches (excluding 1991, when all teams were debutants)

Ecuador

  • Lost their first-ever FIFA Women’s World Cup game 6-0 to Cameroon
  • First-ever team to concede three penalties in a FIFA Women’s World Cup match
  • Only Côte d’Ivoire (10-0 loss to Germany) suffered a heavier defeat in their FIFA WOMEN’S WORLD CUP CANADA 2015™ opening match
  • Captain Ligia Moreira is suspended following a red card in the 6-0 defeat to Cameroon
  • Last win was 1-0 against Trinidad & Tobago in second leg of a FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifying playoff game in December 2014

Game Day Notes: USA vs. Sweden

Sweden's head coach Pia Sundhage coached USA at the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup, where USA lost the final on penalties to Japan. USA is ranked second in the world and Sweden is ranked fifth. The nations are in the same group in a FIFA Women’s World Cup for the fourth time in succession. They will face each other for the fifth time, making USA-Sweden the most-played fixture in FIFA Women’s World Cup history. Team USA has won three of the four previous meetings. Sweden won the last time the teams met (2011).

USA

  • USA’s 2-1 loss to Sweden in 2011 remains their only loss in the FIFA Women’s World Cup group stage
  • Christen Press scored USA’s 100th FIFA Women’s World Cup goal in their opening game vs. Australia. USA is the second nation to reach the 100-goal mark – Germany did so in their 10-0 win against Côte d’Ivoire
  • Set to play their 38th FIFA Women’s World Cup match, an ongoing record
  • Should Hope Solo start, she will play her 172th cap. The most for a USA goalkeeper is 173 by Briana Scurry
  • Abby Wambach needs three goals to become the all-time leading goal scorer at the FIFA Women’s World Cup. Marta (Brazil) has 15 goals and retired Birgit Prinz (Germany) has 14
  • Have reached the semi-finals in all six FIFA Women's World Cups

Sweden

  • Tied first group game 3-3 against Nigeria. Sweden conceded three goals in a FIFA Women’s World Cup group stage match for the first time since a 3-1 defeat to USA in 2003
  • Have won 12, drawn two, and lost five of their 19 group stage matches
  • Sweden were outshot 14-7 during their opening game against Nigeria and committed 10 more fouls than the Nigerians

Game Day Notes: Japan vs. Cameroon

Japan and Cameroon meet for the first time in a women’s international game at any level. In FIFA Women’s World Cup history, only once has an African side beaten an Asian side (Nigeria beat North Korea 2-1 in 1999).

Japan

  • Won opening group game 1-0 over Switzerland. No reigning champion has ever lost its opening game in FIFA Women’s World Cup history
  • On her 200th cap, Homare Sawa became the first player to play in six FIFA Women’s World Cups (Brazil’s Formiga matched the feat a day later)
  • Forward Kozue Ando is out for the remainder of the tournament after fracturing her ankle on the play that led to Japan’s penalty in their opening game

Cameroon

  • Won opening game against Ecuador 6-0, the biggest win by an African side at the FIFA Women’s World Cup and the biggest win by any team in their debut match
  • Only the third debutant team to win an opening FIFA Women’s World Cup game
  • First team to receive three penalties in a FIFA Women’s World Cup match
  • No African side has won consecutive matches at the FIFA Women’s World Cup
