Match: Canada vs. New Zealand

Canadian coach John Herdman coached New Zealand from 2006-2011 before joining Canada. Herdman led New Zealand to appearances in the 2007 and 2011 FIFA Women's World Cups, as well as the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. New Zealand never won a FIFA Women's World Cup game with Herdman as coach.

Canada

• Christine Sinclair’s injury time penalty kick goal in Canada’s opening game was her 154th career goal. She trails the USA’s Mia Hamm by four goals for second-most all-time in women’s soccer

In this Original Feature, Canadian women’s national team head coach John Herdman tells a simple but powerful story. He describes how he used a picture of a broken-hearted Christine Sinclair following Canada’s last place performance at the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup to inspire his team to win this year’s tournament on home soil. His simple message: Do It For Christine. The feature includes footage from Canada’s  opening match against China PR on Saturday, in which Sinclair stepped up for her team and scored a penalty kick in extra time to clinch Canada’s 1-0 victory.

Game Day Notes: Germany vs. Norway

Germany won their opening game 10-0 over Côte D’Ivoire and Norway topped Thailand 4-0. Norway and Germany have played twice in FIFA Women's World Cup history. Each team has won once. Germany won 3-0 in the 2007 semifinal. Norway won 2-0 in the 1995 final. Germany won the UEFA Women's Euro 2013 final against Norway 1-0.

Germany:

• Celia Sasic scored the fastest hat trick in FIFA Women's World Cup history against Côte d’Ivoire (31 minutes)
• Anja Mittag also scored a hat trick against Côte d’Ivoire and was named player of the game
• Was the third time in FIFA Women's World Cup history that teammates recorded hat tricks in the same game
• Had 17 shots on target against Côte d’Ivoire, allowed only two
• Had 61% possession against Côte d’Ivoire

Norway

• Won the FIFA Women's World Cup in 1995

Netherlands won their first-ever FIFA Women's World Cup match 1-0 over New Zealand in their opening group game. China PR lost their opener to Canada 1-0 on a Christine Sinclair penalty kick in injury time.

Netherlands

Côte d’Ivoire and Thailand had a rude awakening in their opening group games. Côte d’Ivoire was humbled 10-0 by top-ranked Germany, and Thailand fell 4-0 to 1995 champion Norway.

Cote d’Ivoire

• The 10-0 loss to Germany was the second-worst defeat in FIFA Women's World Cup history
• Despite allowing 10 goals, goalkeeper Dominique Thiamale came up with a string of saves, seven in all

Thailand

• Had only 35% possession against Norway in their opening group game
• Had three attempts on target against Norway
• Midfielder Kanjana Sung-Ngoen was Thailand's star performer against Norway, using her blistering pace to trouble the Norwegian defence numerous times, especially in the first half
